MIXED FORM OF HINDI – GOOD OR BAD???
All of us have heard this line in IDEA Cellular ads – WHAT AN IDEA SIRJEE. But have any one of us done some analysis on this dialogue?? Karan Thapar has, in one of his article themed around prevalence of modified Hindi in the Indian society. Every now and then, we keep using English words while speaking in Hindi. Many people develop this habit deliberately to live in this cosmopolitan society while others do it as if these words are inherent in our Hindi vocabulary. So where has this SHUDH HINDI (Pure form of Hindi) vanished??
I give you an exercise- try speaking on any issue in pure Hindi for 5 mins. And I am sure you’ll land up using several English words in between. I tried it, and I failed. A few basic sentences (that I’ll jot down later in the article) that we use, shows how English has slowly crept in our day to day lives. I am not saying it’s bad. But it’s always better if we either speak apt English or apt Hindi. Speaking in, what some call as HINDNGLISH, may sometime land you up in a situation where you cannot find a HINDI substitute for your word, hence facing some communication tribulations in villages where English is not prominent. And Vice-a-Versa condition is equally irritating.
Some basic day to day life sentences like , “Mujhe BOOK chahiye”, “MEDICINE TIME pe lena”, ”MESSAGE karte rehna”, ”CALL uthao”, “BLACK joote dikhaao” etc etc. All these have some English words that can so easy be replaced by equivalent Hindi words to sound more pure. But …
So I ask you just one question – Is it right to let some foreign words come into our Hindi (or any local language) vocabulary, that to, to such an extent that it becomes an integral part of our day to day conversations? Where has those campaigns to promote shudh hindi gone?? Or is it the result & need of the modern day society that makes you sound COOL?? I leave the judgment to you …
PS: I OFTEN USE SOME ENGLISH WORDS TO EXPESS MYSELF …
Another point that could be added here is regarding the diminishing status of the hindi medium schools in our nation. How often do we find a child studying in Hindi medium school ?
